Ajmad Khan (more popularly known as Amjad Khan) was one of the most iconic actors in Indian cinema, best remembered for his legendary role as Gabbar Singh in the film Sholay (1975). Born on 12 November 1940 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), he was the son of actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan), who was also a respected figure in Bollywood.
Amjad Khan started his career with small roles but gained overnight stardom with his unforgettable performance as Gabbar, which became one of the most quoted and feared villains in film history. His powerful dialogue delivery and unique style set a new benchmark for negative roles in Bollywood. Apart from villainous characters, he also proved his versatility by playing comic and character roles in movies like Laawaris, Yaarana, Love Story, and Chameli Ki Shaadi.
Despite health issues after a serious accident in 1976, he continued working actively in films. He also directed the movie Chor Police (1983). Amjad Khan passed away on 27 July 1992 at the age of 51, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
