Elizabeth Olsen is an American actress who has gained worldwide recognition for her roles in various films and television shows, especially as "Wanda/Scarlet Witch" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She is also the younger sister of famous fashion designers and former actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Elizabeth Chase Olsen was born on February 16, 1989, in Sherman Oaks, California. She began acting at age four, appearing in her sisters' projects such as How the West Was Fun and The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley. She also took ballet and singing lessons as a child, and attended Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood. She almost quit acting in 2004 due to the media attention surrounding Mary-Kate's eating disorder, but decided to pursue her passion for the art form.
She enrolled at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company and spent a semester at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia. She made her professional stage debut as an understudy in the off-Broadway play Dust in 2008, and later in the Broadway play Impressionism in 2009.
Her breakthrough film role came in 2011, when she starred as Martha, a young woman who escapes from a cult and struggles with paranoia and delusions, in the critically acclaimed thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene". She also starred in her own miniseries "WandaVision" in 2021, which explored her character's grief and trauma after losing her lover Vision. Her performance in WandaVision earned her nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
Besides her work with Marvel, Olsen has continued to appear in diverse films such as Wind River, a mystery thriller set on a Native American reservation; Ingrid Goes West, a dark comedy about social media obsession; Kodachrome, a road trip drama about a dying photographer; and I Saw the Light, a biopic of country singer Hank Williams. She also executive produced and starred as Leigh Shaw, a widow coping with loss and depression, in the Facebook Watch drama series Sorry for Your Loss from 2018 to 2019. She received a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for her role. In 2023, she portrayed Candy Montgomery, a woman who killed her friend with an axe, in the HBO Max miniseries "Love & Death". She was nominated for another Golden Globe Award for her performance.
